It s a tactical puzzle, but a reactive one where you have the freedom to try lots of different solutions to its military conundrums. Not just a great place to start, it s simply a brilliant wargame. Image credit 2x2 Games. Hearts of Iron 4. Hearts of Iron 4 is a grand strategy wargame hybrid, as comfortable with logistics and precise battle plans as it is with diplomacy and sandboxy weirdness. Ostensibly game about World War 2, it lets you throw out history as soon as you want.
Want to conquer the world as a communist UK. Maybe Germany will be knocked out of the war early, leaving Italy to run things. You can even keep things going for as long as you want, leading to a WW2 that continues into the 50s or 60s. With expansions, it s fleshed out naval battles, espionage and other features so you have control over nearly every aspect of the war. Steel Division Normandy 44. Steel Division Normandy 44 takes its cues from Eugen Systems exceptional Wargame series, combining the titular subgenre with loads of RTS goodness.
Normandy 44 takes the action back to World War 2 and tears France apart with its gargantuan battles. It s got explosive real-time fights, but with mind-boggling scale and additional complexities ranging from suppression mechanics to morale and shock tactics. The sequel, Steel Division 2, brings with it some improvements, but unfortunately the singleplayer experience isn t really up to snuff. In multiplayer, though, it s pretty great.
And if the World War 2 setting isn t your cup of tea, the older Wargame series still represents some of the best of both RTS and wargaming, so they re absolutely worth taking for a spin. We re always updating this list, and below are a few upcoming games that we re hoping we ll eventually be able to include. These are the strategy games we re most looking forward to, so check out what you should be keeping an eye on.
Crusader Kings 3. After eight years of updating and expanding Crusader Kings 2, Paradox is finally making a sequel. Crusader Kings 3 is expected to have almost all of its predecessor s systems, but on a greatly expanded map that s four times larger, and with a greater focus on roleplaying. The stories of idiot nobles, families assassinating each other and romances with horses made CK2 such a singular strategy game, and leaning into these emergent character-driven narratives even more can only be a good thing.
This time, it s even using a character progression system that would look right at home in a traditional RPG. Characters can work their way down different lifestyle trees, unlocking perks that further specialise them and give them new abilities. Even the dynasties themselves can level up and gain helpful boons. But Paradox says it won t be shedding any of its grand strategy elements, which it s also been tweaking and, in some cases, overhauling.
It s due out this year. Homeworld 3. Image credit Gearbox Publishing. Deserts of Kharak was fantastic, which is why you ll find it above, but who hasn t yearned for a true Homeworld sequel. Blackbird Interactive s Homeworld 3 will have 3D combat with massive scale battles that let you control everything from tiny interceptors to massive motherships, just like you d expect, as well as moving Homeworld s saga forward. The studio still hasn t revealed much about the sequel, though its iqoption.c vision is to capture how the original games looked and played something it even managed to do with Deserts of Kharak, despite being a ground-based RTS but with meaningful improvements.
One example of the changes is how the ballistic system works. It s still a long way off, though, with launch not expected until 2022. Image credit Amplitude Studios. Humankind is Amplitude s take on Civilization, featuring dynamic civilisations that are born from culture combos. After years of working on its Endless series of games, the best of which you ll find on the list above, Amplitude has now turned its attention to a historical-themed 4X game.
You might start out playing as the Hittites in the first era, and then pick Romans later on, and then throw the Germans into the mix down the line. With new eras come new cultures that you can add to the melting pot, unlocking new culture-specific benefits. It also expresses this through its cities, which grow throughout history, swallowing up the land around them. Some places will retain their historic attributes, like the older quarters of modern cities, while others areas will adapt as the eras progress.
You ll be able to start building your civilisation later this year. Best strategy mods. Some of our favourite strategy games have spawned enduring modding communities, keeping decade-old game alive with dramatic overhauls that continue to be updated long after the devs have moved on. As well as celebrating the best strategy games, then, we also want to celebrate a few of our favourite strategy mods.
Third Age Total War. Image credit Sega TW_King_Kong. Until Total War Warhammer, we had to rely on mods to get our fantasy Total War kicks, but with mods as good as Third Age, that wasn t too much of a sacrifice. It s a Medieval 2 overhaul that recreates the third age of Middle-earth, including cities, landmarks and all the ents and orcs you could hope you fight or befriend. Lord of the Rings has inspired countless mods, but this remains one of the best. XCOM Long War. XCOM Long War could have been an expansion.
It throws in so much and tweaks pretty much everything, but it never compromises the game it s built on. Strategy games to watch. XCOM was great, but it was quite a bit more streamlined than original X-COM designer Julian Gollop s vision of the series. Long War merged them, giving fans of the older games something trickier and meatier to play with, but it still felt modern and polished. Firaxis developers even got involved, and for XCOM 2 the team created some official add-ons, before following up the mod with Long War 2.
Crusader Kings 2 is pretty much the perfect platform for a Game of Thrones strategy game. Image credit Paradox CK2 AGOT dev team. It s fat with intrigue, warring nobles and mad monarchs tearing kingdoms apart. That s not to say that the creators of CK2 s A Game of Thrones mod haven t changed loads. It s a substantial overhaul that goes beyond changing the map and giving people lore-approriate names.
Most of the focus is on one throne that everyone s fighting over, for instance, so the structure of the game has been changed to fit the setting. It also introduced a few systems before Paradox did, including characters being able to duel each other. No official game has been able to capture the books or show quite like the mod.

The Greatest Options Trade I Ever Saw. Options Trading Is Not for the Faint of Heart. As a trader of options on the Chicago Board of Options Exchange CBOE for over 10 years, I witnessed and heard many unbelievable trading stories.
There were stories of traders risking too much and losing everything, and traders retiring by the age of 25 having made their fortune through skill or luck. But the greatest options trade I ever saw happened during the market crash of 1987. The Greatest Options Trade I ve Seen Happened in the Shadows. Legend has it that one trader thought he had bought one put on the S P 500 the right to short the S P 500only to find out many hours later he had bought 1,000. Another great story came from my old trading company.
This lucky mistake netted him well over 10 million. My former boss, a trading veteran of nearly 30 years and a millionaire many times over, was as cheap as anyone I d ever met in fact, he had never given a raise to a clerk or intern as long as the company had been in existence. Free Report How to Hedge Portfolios with Options.
Once considered a niche segment of the investing world, options trading has now gone mainstream. With little knowledge on the best strategies, you can use options to work the odds in your favor and make trades that have up to an 80 probability of success. One day, my boss and another trader got into a fistfight in the middle of the trading crowd. The fight deteriorated to the point that these two 50-year-old men were rolling on the ground wrestling.
Out of nowhere, my boss s clerk, a woman no larger than 5 2 and 100 lbs. The story goes that my boss was in trouble as the other man had pinned him down and was repeatedly punching him in the face. Find out how in this free report, How Options Work and How to Hedge Portfolios with Options. and whose voice never rose higher than a whisper, picked up a computer monitor and bashed it over the head of my boss s opponent.
Clearly the trading floor is not for the faint of heart. As soon as the trading day ended, my boss walked across the street and withdrew 10,000 in cash and handed out his first-ever bonus. However, for those that excel in the fast-paced world of trading, there s no better place in the world than the CBOE. Some traders don t stop talking about their brilliance and all the money they make through their great trading skills.
Not many people outside of my old company know about this trade it s the greatest options trade I ever witnessed. That s why so few know about this trade. Others, like Pete, a trader who worked at my company, make their money quietly. For years, Pete made good money simply trading Enron in a conservative manner. However, once the cracks started forming in the Enron story, Pete used the leverage of options to build a massive bearish position.
Pete traded in the Enron trading pit. In case you don t remember, Enron was trading as high as 90 a share in August of 2000, and by December of 2001, the company would be near bankruptcy. Pete didn t make his fortune by shorting Enron at 90. In fact, he slowly made money trading it conservatively until the stock neared 35 in September 2001. At that point, the sharks were circling as big trading firms such as Goldman Sachs GS and Morgan Stanley MS were in Pete s trading crowd buying as many puts as they could.
With the stock trading at 35, these smart money traders were buying puts that would enable them to short the stock at 25 and 20. The other members of Pete s trading crowd couldn t believe the lunacy of buying these puts, so they aggressively sold puts to Goldman and Morgan Stanley. Pete, on the other hand, quietly bought the same puts as Goldman and MS suspecting that the smart money might have more information than the rest of us. The stock collapsed in the proceeding weeks, trading at around 10 by early November 2011.
Most traders at this point would have locked in their profits, and maybe even taken a bullish position thinking that the company couldn t possibly go out of business. In fact, our boss begged Pete to lock in his big score and get long. But Pete kept his short position, and continued to aggressively buy 10 and 5 strike puts.
Soon enough, the stock traded at under a dollar a share and Pete had made the greatest options trade I d ever seen. Pete wasn t the smartest guy on the trading floor. He wasn t even the smartest guy in my small trading company. But he s one of the best traders I ve ever seen at riding his winners. Battling Yourself.
Trading stocks and options is a great psychological battle with ourselves. Far too iqoption.c, we sell winners too soon and let losers run too far. Just think about how great it feels to lock in a profit and get that instant gratification yet these are the trades we should be letting run as far as possible. Even with all of my trading experience, I still fight against myself. Not long ago, my Cabot Options Trader subscribers and I had a big winning trade in Fiat Chrysler FCAU calls.
Our position increased to a 320 gain. The smart money kept putting on bullish options positions and yet, I wanted to sell it when the market was going down for a day the exact opposite of how I should have been thinking. I ve been winning this battle with myself more and more these days and I was able to hold this position for a triple-digit gain. So next time you re thinking about selling out of a profitable position, ask yourself this Are you selling it because you want the instant gratification of locking in a profit.
If so, step back and rethink your trading plan and maybe even think back to the story about Pete, and the greatest options trade I ever saw. Share below. The Millennial Generation Research Review. Chamber of Commerce Foundation.
Published in 2012 by the U. This report provides a summary of the research done on the Millennial generation since 2009. Generational cohorts are just one way to categorize a group of people with similarities in this case, the era in which individuals were born and when they came of age. Iqoption.c will use the birth years of 1980 to 1999 here to define the Millennial cohort.
Sources, though, are inconsistent, with as many as 21 different birth spans referenced. Baby Boom Generation. Like every other generation, Millennials display generalized and unique traits. Economic, political, and social background influences the culture and creates a lasting impact. Changes cannot be fully understood for some time, usually around the time the unique characteristics of the next generation become recognized.
Imprints move through the life cycle of individuals, making more significant impressions on youth when they are forming their core values. Of course, these societal events affect other generations, though they are often interpreted differently through the lens of maturity and experience. Eventually, the young adults of one generation become the elders, carrying elements of their generational influence with them and making a lasting impact on society.
Generation X is the skeptical independent, shaped by latchkeys, Watergate, and the PC. If each generation has a personality, you may say that the baby boomer is the idealist, shaped by Woodstock, JFK, RFK, and MLK. Generation Y is the connected, diverse collaborator, shaped by 9 11, texting, and the recession.
It is therefore understandable that the stereotypical ambitious boomer workaholic may be critical of one who does not share the same ethics and values. Iqoption.c independent Gen Xer may not appreciate the team orientation and desire for seemingly constant feedback. At the same time, the social-minded Millennial may not understand the priorities of other generations.
Millennials are likely the most studied generation to date. Census Bureau statistics, there are plenty of them to study, 80 million plus the largest cohort size in history. There are data to find pretty much whatever you are looking for, as the data are varied and sometimes contradictory. In fact, Millennials are full of contradictions, which, of course, may explain the youth of any generation.
Most consistent is that this generation is technically savvy, almost as if it has a digital sixth sense. A wired, connected world is all that Millennials have ever known. They are considered optimistic, with 41 satisfied with the way things are going in the country, compared with 26 of those over 30. G1 Optimism abounds despite the many tragic events that have shaped this generation, such as 9 11, terrorist attacks, school shootings like Columbine, the 2004 Southeast Asian tsunami, and hurricane Katrina.
As kids, they were tightly scheduled and many would say overindulged by helicopter parents. Political, economic, and organizational influences include the 2000 election, the impeachment of a president, the recession and the fall of Enron to name a few. They were products of NCLB, reality TV, and an iWorld, where Starbucks is usually just a short walk away. For the purposes of this report, this cohort will be called Generation Y, Gen Y or with more frequency, Millennials, as they reportedly prefer.
There are at least 30 other labels for this generation. MOST DIVERSE GENERATION. Young people are more tolerant of races and groups than older generations 47 vs. 19with 45 agreeing with preferential treatment to improve the position of minorities. This may be attributable to the diversity of the generation itself, which recalls that of the silent generation. The shifting population is evidenced with 60 of 18 29 year olds classified as non-Hispanic white, versus 70 for those 30 and older.
This reflects a record low of whites, with 19 Hispanic, 14 black, 4 Asian, and 3 of mixed race or other. Additionally, 11 of Millennials are born to at least one immigrant parent. Millennials are considered multitaskers extraordinaire, though brain science tells us that multitasking is a myth. When it comes to heavy media multitasking, studies show greater vulnerability to interference, leading to decreased performance.
G4 Some studies suggest that this generation is rewiring the brain with extensive multitasking training, evidenced by the teenager who can simultaneously play video games, watch TV, and do homework. G3 More likely, they are apt to switching tasks quickly enough to appear to be doing them simultaneously. They are retraining the brain to reduce the performance deterioration of multitasking by increasing the speed of information the brain processes. This rewiring allows multiple tasks to be processed in more rapid succession.
This activity and research suggest that our brains are evolving. Popular opinion is that Millennials are more caring, community oriented, and politically engaged than previous generations. Psychologist and Gen Y researcher Jean Twenge contradicts these assumptions. She and her colleagues find that today s youth are more interested in extrinsic life goals and less concerned for others and civic engagement. G5 They are described as overly self-confident and self-absorbed.
This generation masters self-expression, with 75 creating a profile on a social networking site, 20 posting a video of themselves online, 38 with one to six tattoos, and 23 with a piercing in some place other than an earlobe. G1 There is also a trend toward personal branding, which, on its surface, appears self-promoting. Looking a bit deeper reveals a method for young people to identify their passions and determine the most expedient path forward, rather than having others set a path for them.
MORE SIGNS OF THE TIMES. Millennial s main sources for news are television 65 and the Internet 59. Lagging behind are newspapers 24 and radio 18. G1 Different from the youth of the two previous generations, parents have considerable influence on Millennial s political views. In one study of young American leaders, 61 listed parents as most influential, far in advance of public leaders 19 and the media 12.
G7 Faith leaders and celebrities ranked as having minimal or least influence. Millennials are never far away from their next text, with 80 sleeping with their cell phone next to the bed. For some, this bed is in their parents homes, as 13 have boomeranged back because of the recession after living on their own.
Thirty-six percent say they depend on financial support from their families. Many Millennials have grown up with parental support and encouragement and have experienced relatively comfortable lifestyles. Approximately 20 of American Millennials living in poverty have not been so privileged. Nearly half of Millennials feel they may be worse off than their parents.
Health trends indicate that Millennials could be the first generation in over a century to see their lifespan level off and even decline, G9 with obesity becoming epidemic. For the most part, the priorities of being a good parent and having a successful marriage are most important to Millennials, similar to those held by Gen Xers at a similar stage of life.
Similarly, helping others in need is as important to the youth of both generations. Differences in the order of life s priorities are that older generations are more likely to place a higher importance on a very religious life 21 vs. 15 and a lower importance on being successful in a high-paying career 7 vs. Millennials have and will continue to influence education.
First, as students, these digital natives have forced learning institutions to communicate and educate in new ways. They bring a new generational personality done of optimism, structure, team orientation, and a confidence bordering on entitlement. Instructors are figuring out how to manage the amount of involvement and feedback these students demand. Some institutions are adapting their space to a less formal learning environment that combines structured learning with preferred group-based practical learning.
Millennials are also entering the teaching ranks. Like their corporate peers, they prefer frequent feedback, fairness, recognition, and peer learning. Parents of Millennials influence the environment as they continue their active involvement in their children s educational experience. Educators are celebrating the high school graduation rate, which now stands at 72. This is the highest level of high school completion in more than two decades.
ED1 Of those graduates, 68 enrolled in college. ED2 Approximately 58 of those entering a four-year institution will receive a bachelor s degree within six years. While education is expensive, education levels had more effect on earnings over a 40-year span than any other demographic factor. Earnings increase incrementally for those with some high school, with a high school diploma, with a bachelor s, to those with an advanced degree.
ED4 This helps Millennials with their average 25,000 student loan debt. For the first time in America, there is now more student loan debt than credit card debt. See more content related to millennials, from the U. College prices are rising more rapidly than the prices of other goods and services. Despite the fact that more students and families struggle to pay for higher education, enrollments continue to increase.
As students recognize that more education leads to higher earnings throughout life, they are finding ways to finance their education. Sustaining enrollment will require postsecondary institutions to find more cost-effective methods to offer high-quality education. Millennials score high on IQ tests. They also score higher on such traits as extraversion, self-esteem, self-liking, high expectations, and assertiveness.
These traits are purported to often lead to narcissism and entitlement. Two-thirds of students predict they will perform in the top 20 of the population in their adult jobs. Self-esteem cannot deliver their expected success, and this mathematical impossibility leads many to experience frustration. They are showing measures of stress, anxiety, and symptoms of depression and are receiving lower scores on self-reliance.
Millennials want a clearly structured academic path. They look for special treatment and ask specifically what knowledge is required for exams. ED8 College professors sense there students wanting to be entertained by the instructor.
